Home > Wish List

The OpenRP Initiative is in its very early stages. A lot has been done and a lot needs to be done. We have decided to make the OpenRP wish list public so that you can get a better understanding the needs of different people related to the RP industry.

Wisher Wish
David Weathers The RP file should have two passwords instead of one. One for viewing the file and the other for saving as RP/STL.
Bathsheba Grossman Add "Convert to RP" in the Explorer right click menu.
Travis Serio Allow user to set RP Viewer as the program to open STL files if he so desires.

If you want to add to the wish list send us an email.

Proposed Work

We have been receiving requests to extend the RP file format to store more information such as unit, color, material, etc. This can be done. But doing so will effect the compatibility of the RP file format with the STL file format, since the STL file format is not capable of storing information other than the basic geometry of the model. Your suggestions in this regard are most welcome.

As of now, the best solution is to create another file format (which is a superset of the RP file format) called RPX (Extended RP format). A RPX file will contain all of the RP file format data and more. Moreover, a STL file (and hence a RP file) cannot store the geometry of more than one model. Using the new RPX file format we will be able to store more than one model and have relations between the models in a single RPX file.

What are your views on this solution? If you support the idea of creating the RPX file format please let us know what kind of data you want the RPX file format to contain. Please use the contact form.
